Hanoi (VNA) – Chairman of the National Assembly’s Committee for External Relations Nguyen Van Giau met the ambassadors and heads of diplomatic representative agencies of the Asia-Pacific Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) member countries and informed them about the agenda of the IPU’s upcoming symposium on response to climate change.

During their meeting in Hanoi on May 4, Giau said the symposium for the Asia-Pacific region on response to climate change – lawmakers’ actions to realise the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will take place from May 11-13 in Ho Chi Minh City, the city lying near areas hard hit by climate change.

The conference features three sessions on SDGs and the IPU’s role; gender equality promotion and health improvement amid climate change response; opportunities, challenges and response to climate change; international commitments and requirements for lawmakers; and rallying resources for SDGs.

At the end of the event, the organising board will issue a statement on regional countries’ measures and recommendations involving climate change response, he said.

Giau affirmed that the event provides a platform for parliaments, parliamentarians, sponsors and international organisations to share experience and promote cooperation in executing the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

Twenty countries registered to participate in the symposium, which is co-organised by the IPU and the Vietnamese legislature.
