National Assembly Vice Chairman Uong Chu Luu had productive working sessions with senior Dutch officials in The Hague, the Netherlands, on July 2.

Meeting with Director General of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) Ahmet Uzumcu, Luu expressed hope that OPCW will continue with technical and personnel training assistance to Vietnam, making it easier for the country to realise terms of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC).

As one of the first OPCW official members on October 30, 1998, Vietnam had the fullest legal system relevant to the observance of CWC at the earliest.

Vietnam has well fulfilled the OPCW Technical Secretariat’s every request to its members and raised awareness of CWC among local units and businesses concerned, he said. Since 2003, the country has welcomed delegations of OPCWT technicians and industrial inspectors to its chemical processing plants.

Informing the host of China’s dispatch of its oil rig Haiyang Shiyou – 981 and escort ships to Vietnam’s continental shelf and exclusive economic zone, Luu noted that Vietnam advocates settling the issue by peaceful means and dialogue in line with international law, and hopes for the world community and OPCW’s help with this issue.

Also the same day, Luu learnt about the responsibilities and managerial experience of President of the Supreme Court of the Netherlands Geert J.M. Cortens.

Welcoming the Vietnamese delegation in the afternoon, Chairman of the Dutch Committee on Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation Raymond Van Roon said he is keen on knowing how Vietnam runs its dynamic and stable economy in face of the global financial crisis.

Hopefully, the Netherlands will become the top European investor in Vietnam, Luu said after expressing his pleasure at bilateral cooperation which saw two-way trade topping 6.2 billion USD.

About the ongoing East Sea dispute, the guest highly valued the Dutch government’s approval of the European Union’s statement on the East Sea issue, as well as the support provided by the Prime Minister, the House of Representatives and people of the Netherlands to Vietnam in its fight for justice.

The Vice Chairman also took the occasion to invite leaders of the Dutch House of Representatives to attend the 132 nd General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Hanoi from March 28 – April 1, 2015.-VNA
