Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa said in his closing remarks that the conference had been fruitful and was a meaningful commemorative meeting.

He said that the deliberations yielded a 127-page final document that reflected the shared vision and common position of the Movement and sent a strong message on the need to step up NAM ’s efforts on the reform of the United Nations and the global economic and financial system.

The document, together with the Bali Commemorative Declaration issued on May 25, on the 50 th anniversary of the Movement’s founding, also prescribed measures to address emerging challenges in the world of the 21 st century, while calling for enhanced international cooperation to address challenges that defied national solution alone, he said.

The Indonesian FM said the meeting confirmed the admission of Azerbaijan and Fiji into the NAM family and reaffirmed the commitment of member countries to democratic values and the promotion and protection of human rights.

As a conclusion to the focus on Palestine throughout the meeting, the Indonesian FM said that NAM called for the release of Palestinian prisoners and denounced the brutality they had suffered from the Israeli government.

The 16th NAM summit brought together 130 delegations from member countries, observer countries and international organisations.

The next NAM summit was due to be held next year in the Iranian capital city of Teheran. /.
