Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) leader Naoto Kan was elected as the country's new prime minister on June 4, and expected to launch his Cabinet on June 8.

Kan earlier won the majority of votes at both House of Representatives and House of Councillors.

At the more powerful lower house election, the newly-elected DPJ leader won 313 votes out of 477. The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) president Sadakazu Tanigaki received 116 votes. He then gained 123 ballots out of 237 at the upper house as compared with 71 votes secured by Tanigaki.

Kan , Japan ’s 94 th prime minister, is planing to name Yoshito Sengoku, who was former state minister in charge of designing national strategy, as the new cabinet’s chief secretary.

Kan and Shizuka Kamei, president of the People's New Party - the DPJ's small coalition partner - had also agreed to continue to form a government together.

At the DPJ presidential election, Kan pledged to pursue four major targets set out by his predecessor Yukio Hatoyama such as the establishment of an East Asia community and cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 25 percent from 1990 levels by 2020. The other goals are to give more power to local administrations and improve public services.

He also vowed to regain people’s confidence to DPJ, following a series of money scandals of parliamentarians, including former PM Hatoyama and DPJ’s General Secretary Ichiro Ozawa./.
