About 9.4 trillion VND (522 million USD) will be needed for a programme to prevent the loss of safe water resources in Vietnam ’s urban areas through 2025.

Currently, an average of 30 percent of water that is safe for daily use and production is lost due to leaks and inefficiencies in the current delivery systems in densely populated areas.

The programme was announced at a conference on reducing water losses held in the central city of Da Nang on Mar. 25.

The capital for the programme is expected to be drawn from the State budget, official development assistance (ODA), State preferential credits and other sources.

If it is approved, the programme would help all urban people gain access to safe water by 2020 and reduce the rate of safe water losses to 15 percent by 2025.

According to the ministry, the country now has 68 water supply companies, providing usable water to about 70 percent of population in more than 750 urban areas.

Under the programme, water suppliers will have to re-draw the map of the water supply system and inspect pipelines to come up with a strategy for repairs and upgrades, as well as invest in equipment to plug leaks in the system and train technicians.

The current rate of loss of clean water is much lower than in 1998 (42 percent), but much higher than the rates in other regional countries, the ministry said./.
