Hanoi (VNA) – The National Assembly (NA) has been working to fulfill assigned tasks for 2018, Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan said in an interview with Vietnam News Agency following Vietnam’s successful hosting of the 26th annual meeting of the Asia-Pacific Parliamentary Forum (APPF-26) and on the occasion of the Lunar New Year.

Looking back at achievements in the second year of the 14th legislature, Ngan said the NA adopted 18 laws, gave feedback on 15 bills and held question-and-answer sessions on practical issues during its third and fourth sessions in 2017.

The legislature discussed, considered and approved a number of important decisions and projects, including policies exerting huge impacts on the country’s socio-economic development, she said.

The NA Chairwoman particularly highlighted the fact that the country fulfilled and overfulfilled all 13 socio-economic targets in 2017 with a GDP growth rate of 6.81 percent – a record high since 2011, which created momentum for 2018 and beyond.

She said 2018 is a year to continue realising the Resolution adopted by the 12th National Party Congress and the NA’s programmes during its tenure.

In the spirit of renovation, creativity and action-mindedness for the interest of the people and the country, the law-making body will focus on carrying out its plans on building laws and ordinances and legal supervision, and drafting working plans for 2019 to deal with issues of public concern. The NA will also hold votes of confidence on positions elected and approved by the NA, she said.

On external relations, Ngan said 2017 marked a successful year of parliamentary diplomacy, bilaterally and multilaterally. During meetings and exchanges, the Vietnamese NA was lauded by leaders of other countries’ legislatures, while visits opened up new cooperation opportunities between Vietnam and other countries.

According to her, the Vietnamese NA successfully hosted the 26th Annual Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Parliamentary Forum themed “Parliamentary Partnership for Peace, Innovation and Sustainable development” from January 18-21, which was lauded by parliamentarians from other countries.

Diplomatic activities of the NA, along with those by the Party and State as well as people-to-people diplomacy, have contributed to creating a favourable international environment for the country’s development, safeguarding national independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity and improving Vietnam’s position on the international arena, she said.-VNA
