Two typhoons and an earthquake over the past several days have caused a devastating death toll that is still being counted in parts of mainland China , Taiwan and Japan .

At least 38 people in Taiwan have been confirmed dead after Typhoon Morakot battered the island over the weekend.

The local authorities fear that the typhoon also buried about 100 others in a village in the southern county of Kaohsiung .

The local rescue force evacuated nearly 100 villagers but some 600 others are reported missing.

The typhoon damaged many bridges and caused a mudslide which buried some 200 houses.

On the Chinese mainland, six people have been confirmed dead and more than one million others had to leave their houses to escape the killer storm.

Torrential rains on Aug. 10 caused a landslide in the mountainous western area of Zhejiang province, burying seven houses. The number of victims has not yet been estimated.

Another typhoon, Etau, caused flashfloods and landslides in western Japan , killing 13 people and leaving 18 others missing. Thousands of people were evacuated as their houses collapsed.

In addition, 80 Japanese were injured due to a 6.5 magnitude earthquake in early Aug. 10.

According to Japan ’s meteorological agency, the quake struck in the Pacific Ocean about 170 km southwest of Tokyo at a depth of 23 km.

The quake also caused a number of fires and tremors, causing two piles at the Hamaoka nuclear power plant to shut down.
