Naval cooperation has contributed to boosting defence ties between Vietnam and China, said Quan doi Nhan dan (People’s Army) newspaper in an article on August 31.
In implementing the Defence Ministry’s instruction in military diplomacy, the Vietnam People’s Navy has improved relationships and cooperation with navies from other countries. It actively proposed initiatives and new forms of operations to raise mutual and effective understanding and trust.
The friendly cooperation with the Navy of the China People’s Liberation Army is a tradition and a focus in external affairs of the Vietnam People’s Navy.
The signing of a joint patrol agreement in the Tonkin Gulf area in October 2005 was the spotlight in the relations between the Vietnamese and Chinese navies. It resulted from the talks between the two countries’ navies, contributing to better implementing the Tonkin Gulf Demarcation Agreement and the Tonkin Gulf Fisheries Cooperation Agreement as well as ensuring order and security at sea.
The two navies have to date conducted 13 joint patrols with effective content, bringing various benefits. They actively built a project to enhance the relationship and promote cooperation between them for the 2009-2012 period.
At the approval of the Parties, States and Defence Ministries of the two countries, the two navies have exchanged ship visits since 2001. Particularly, from 2006 to date, the two navies held joint meetings to review outcomes of joint patrols in the Tonkin Gulf .
Within the framework of the join patrols, the two navies organised different activities including joint training, search and rescue and handling non-traditional security issues at sea.
During his official visit to China in April, 2012, Sen. Lieut. Gen. Do Ba Ty, Chief of the General Staff and Deputy Defence Minister, called at the Shanghai coastal defence area under the Donghai Fleet.
At the annual meeting in Hai Phong city in 2011, the two naval delegations highly valued the visit to China by a flotilla of the Vietnam People’s Navy.
The two navies have been strictly and effectively implementing the agreement on joint patrols in the Tonkin Gulf area, contributing to maintaining stability in the Tonkin Gulf and implementing well the common perception of leaders of the two Parties, States and armies of Vietnam and China .
At their talks last April, Ty and his Chinese counterpart Chen Bing De highly valued outcomes of cooperation between the two navies, particularly in joint patrols in the Tonkin Gulf and search and rescue activities at sea.
