Ho Chi Minh City’s administration has approved an investment of 40 billion VND (1.9 million USD) for projects tackling the flooding problem in the city’s inner districts, particularly Districts 5 and 6.
The investment will be sourced from the city’s budgets and given to the centre that manages all projects dealing with preventing and mitigating the impacts of floods, it said.
Nguyen Hoang Anh Dung, deputy director of the centre, said they will begin implementing soon projects to upgrade drainage systems on Trang Tu, Tran Hung Dao, Pham Dinh Ho, Ba Thang Hai, Tan Hoa dong and Duong Tu Giang streets that cut through several districts.
The projects will be completed by the end of this year, he said.
He added that the municipal People’s Committee has asked the Government to add the Vam Thuan Tide-control Culvert Project and the Nuoc Len Tide-Control Culvert Project to the Support Programme for Response to Climate Change (SP-RCC) that receives investment priority.
According to a report prepared by the HCM City Department of Transport, the five year (2011-15) flood fighting project has, in two years of operation, removed 40 of 58 flood-prone spots, upgrades 3.2 km of existing drains, built 8.1 km of new drains, and upgraded 63.5 km of the targeted 264.3 km of canals.
The report said that since several flood-control projects have not begun implementation, several flood-prone spots in inner districts and many more in the suburban district of Thu Duc still pose danger to residents.
Capital shortage is one of the major hindrances facing flood-fighting projects in HCM City, it said.-VNA
