Dong Van karst plateau in the northern mountainous province of Ha Giang welcomed nearly 4,500 tourist arrivals during the first three days of the traditional Lunar New Year, raking in over 4 billion VND (190,000 USD).

Recognised as a member of the Global Network of National Geoparks (GGN) in 2010, Dong Van plateau is spread over the four districts of Quan Ba, Yen Minh, Meo Vac and Dong Van.

As Vietnam’s first geological park and the second of its kind in Southeast Asia, after Langkawi Geological Park in Malaysia, the 2,356 square kilometre plateau is 80 percent limestone and contains the fossils of thousands of species of prehistoric creatures from 400-600 million years ago.

Coming to the plateau, visitors are also able to enjoy unique ethnic festivals and folk games.

Other local tourist attractions include the Lung Cu flag tower, Dong Van ancient street, Co Tien mountain and Ma Pi Leng mountain pass.

This year, the province will focus on ecological and community-based cultural tourism while preserving geological and cultural heritage sites.-VNA
