The Information and Communications Publishing House has launched a book entitled “Vietnamese mark in the East Sea ” by Dr. Tran Cong Truc, former Chairman of the Government’s Committee for Boundaries.

Published at a time when the Law of the Sea of Vietnam was just adopted by the National Assembly, the book provides accurate information on the East Sea situation to people of all strata, as well as affirming the Vietnamese State’s sound and objective position on the disputes.

It also reflects the Vietnamese State ’s determination to protect its sovereignty, and legitimate rights and interests in the East Sea and fully implement its obligations before the regional and international community.

The 400-page book comprises four chapters. The first chapter introduces the role of Vietnam ’s sea and islands in the national economy, defence and security.

The second provides firm legal grounds to define Vietnam’s maritime zones and continental shelf, especially the scope of the exclusive economic zone, affirming the sovereignty, sovereign right and jurisdictional right of Vietnam in its territorial sea, continental shelf and exclusive economic zone, under the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

Chapter Three summarises the establishment and execution of Vietnam ’s sovereignty over the Truong Sa (Spratly) and Hoang Sa (Paracel) archipelagos since the time of Nguyen Lords, at least since the 17 th century. The last chapter refers to the real situation of and possible solutions for East Sea disputes.

At the same time, a book entitled “Continental Shelf in International Law” compiled by the Department of Foreign Information under the Ministry of Information and Communications has also been published.-VNA
