Indonesian President Joko Widodo inaugurated General Gatot Nurmantyo as the new Commander of the Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI) in Jakarta on July 8.

The inauguration ceremony was held at the Presidential Palace in central Jakarta.

In his oath, Gatot Nurmantyo, succeeding Moeldoko, whose term ends on August 1, pledged to take on the role of the head of the TNI in accordance with the 1945 Constitution.

The appointment of Gatot Nurmantyo, a former army chief of staff, as the TNI Commander was said to break the longstanding tradition of the post rotating between the chiefs of the Army, Navy and Air Force. Accordingly, the position should have been taken by the chief of the Air Force.

President Widodo said he chose Gatot Nurmantyo with a view to strengthening the military organisation.

On the same day, former Jakarta Governor Sutiyoso was inaugurated as the head of the Indonesian Intelligence Agency.-VNA
