Eric NG, who was recently appointed general manager of Sanofi Indochina, has announced to the press that a new dengue vaccine will be made available in 2017, Nhan dan newspaper reported.

Last year, Sanofi Indochina conducted preliminary research on the vaccine which can prevent from 64.7 percent to 89.5 percent of cases of dengue fever after exposure.

The third-phase clinical experiment showed that 60-80 percent of those vaccinated had fewer complications or risks caused by mosquito bites, he said.

For the first five months of this year, Vietnam recorded nearly 11,400 cases of dengue fever, 10 of which were fatal.

Dengue has been present in more than 100 countries and territories worldwide over the past 50 years.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), an estimated 50-100 million cases occur each year.-VNA
