The London-based Intertek Group and the Cambodian government have signed a memorandum of understanding to build a 10 million USD laboratory in Phnom Penh to test gemstones.

Addressing the ceremony, Cambodian Minister of Commerce Cham Prasidhn stated that the lab will increase customers confidence in the quality of gemstones that come from Cambodia.

According to the Cambodian Ministry of Commerce, the lab is expected to come into operation in June, 2011.

Wolfhart Hauser, the Executive Director of Intertek confirmed that the lab would set a standard for gemstone industry in the country, paving the way for direct trade with international markets in Europe and the United States.

Intertek, listed on London stock exchange, has been in Cambodia since 2003 and officially opened a representative office in Phnom Penh at the beginning of this year./.
