The National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion opened a stem cell bank and centre on May 3.

Head of the institute Professor Nguyen Anh Tri said that the stem cell bank will store all the country’s DNA data while the stem cell centre will conduct research, carry out stem cell transplants and apply the most advanced treatments for blood disease.

The centre will also encourage people to donate stem cells for the treatment of blood cancer, bone marrow deficiency, cornea treatment, skin grafts and coronary conditions, added Tri.

The centre will also welcome people who want to store their own stem cells in case they or their relatives require treatment in the future.

Since 2006, the institute has successfully performed 40 stem cell transplants.-VNA
