About 10 road infrastructure projects will be completed and open before Tet (lunar new year), HCM City People’s Committee chairman Le Hoang Quan said on Jan. 13.
Quan said the projects would include the Can Gio district’s Rung Sac Street upgrade project, the North-South Highway , the road connecting Ba Chiem intersection to Hiep Phuoc Industrial Park , Nam Ky Khoi nghia-Nguyen Van Troi streets.
The five bridges to open will be Rach Dia, Phuoc Kieng, Ba Chiem, Dong Dien and Thu Thiem, while the Sai Gon Premier Container Terminal (SPCT) port in Nha Be district will also be inaugurated.
The city will break ground on projects including Nha Be – Can Gio water supply system, Cu Chi district’s Rach Tra Bridge, the road leading to District 2’s Thu Thiem New Urban Zone as wells as public housing, dorms and houses for people with low income.
Quan said the opening of the traffic infrastructure works would be crucial to local residents during Tet and would be a good start for the new year’s socio-economic development.
He urged related agencies, districts and project authorities to keep up with their project schedules.
The newly built East-West Highway would be named after the late Prime Minister Vo Van Kiet before April 30, he told the meeting.
Meanwhile, to 19 footbridges will come into operation by the 1,000 th anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi in October this year, according to the Hanoi Department of Transport.
On Jan. 14, the department held an opening ceremony foe one such footbridge that passes over Tran Dai Nghia street, in front of the National Economic University entrance.
The bridge can be easily assembled/disassemble and moved to another place when it is no longer necessary there, It is hoped that the bridge will enhance the safety of pedestrians, particularly local residents and students of the National Economic University and the Hanoi University of Technology.
The local cost of the bridge was 1.98 billion VND (107,000 USD).
The department, in cooperation with relevant agencies, has carried out field work to locate suitable sites for new bridges. Areas with high traffic flow which may be not safe for pedestrians are a priority.
This is one of the ways the department is using to try and alleviate traffic jams and accidents in the city./.
