The Hanoi Independent Living Centre for the Disabled began a new training course for disabled people to help them become more confident when taking part in social activities and get more out of their lives on Aug. 24.

Shoji Nakanishi, Chairman of the Disabled People International - Asia Pacific (DPIAP) said that the trainers on the five-day course are disabled people who have come from Japanese independent living centres.

The training course aims to provide psychological support for disabled people who live independently in the community.

The trainees will be encouraged to gain skills and become counsellors to support others in the same situation as themselves.

The training course is just part of the many activities run by the centre, which was set up in January 2009 under a joint initiative between the Hanoi Disabled People’s Association, the DPIAP and the For a Brighter Future group with support from the Japanese Nippon Foundation.

On the occasion, the Nippon Foundation presented the centre with a car equipped with a wheelchair lift./.
