Nine countries including China, Russia, Japan, the US and Singapore will send non-competitive entries to the 16th Vietnam Film Festival to be held in HCM City in December.

The festival itself is open only to Vietnamese feature films, documentaries, and cartoons made between August 16, 2007, and September 30, 2009, said Le Ngoc Minh, deputy head of the Vietnam Cinema Department under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism – the organiser of the event.

Films that have won national TV awards would not be accepted, he said.

“We are trying to get the foreign countries to bring their best films as well as actors to Vietnam ,” he said.

The festival will feature workshops on topics like young filmmakers, historical films, and how to attract more people to watch Vietnamese movies.

Entry will be free to the films screened at the festival.

The Vietnam Film Festival was organised for the first time in 1970./.
