Northeast Asian nations set up joint research fund

USD) each year for their first-ever joint research fund to study issues
of mutual concern.

According to Japan ’s Nikkei daily newspaper, the fund will focus on environmental issues and several other areas. It will also use some of the funding to promote joint working between young researchers from the three countries.
An official from Japan ’s Ministry of Education, Science and Technology said that the three Northeast Asian countries will gradually increase their financial contributions to the fund, once the scope of the research is broadened.
Japan ’s Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama, China ’s President Hu Jintao and the RoK’s President Lee Myung-bak are scheduled to officially announce the fund at a trilateral summit on the RoK island of Jeju later this month.
The three countries also plan to call on ASEAN members to join the fund in the future./.
