The northern province of Hung Yen is an exemplary model for prevention and control of avian influenza (AI) in the Red river delta region, said Abt Associates, an American consultancy firm.

Speaking at a review meeting in Hung Yen on September 30, a company representative said the province fully satisfies the criteria of AI prevention and control and has taken various effective measures to contain the epidemic.

The meeting was held to evaluate a project on improving the capacity of preventing avian influenza for the Greater Mekong Sub-region which was conducted in Hung Yen and the southern Mekong delta provice of Can Tho for the last three years.

With the financial support from the US Agency for International Development (USAID), the project was carried out in 12 communes of 3 districts in Hung Yen which were identified to be at high risk of avian influenza by Abt Associates in cooperation with the local authorities.

Through the project, animal health workers and veterinarians as well as local consumers and farmers received training in H1N1 prevention and control measures as well as safe farming methods to reduce the risk and spread of the disease./.
