The Norwegian Government will sponsor the implementation of the UN Collaborative Programme on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation in Developing Countries (UN-REDD) in Vietnam.

In a recent interview granted to Thoi bao Kinh Te Vietnam (the Vietnam Economic Times), First Secretary of the Norwegian Embassy Thea Martine Ottmann said that Vietnam is one of nine countries in the world and the only Southeast Asian nation selected by the UN for carrying out the programme, which is a joint effort of three UN bodies - the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the UN, the UN Development Programme and the UN Environment Programme.

In Vietnam , the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has chosen the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong to deploy the UN-REDD programme, which is expected to help with efforts to cope with climate change, preserve biodiversity and prevent land degradation.

The two-year plan will also build up technical capacity and necessary institutions for Vietnam to carry out more REDD programmes on regional and national scales.

“We hope Vietnam will become one of the REDD successful stories to persuade world leaders that it is possible to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation,” Ottmann said.

Experiences and lessons from the joint efforts of the Vietnamese Government and the UN agencies will help promote the REDD programme at this year’s Copenhagen conference on climate change, she added.

The Norwegian diplomat also stressed that all economic sectors are encouraged to involve in REDD and the State will only play the role of a coordinator.

As REDD will operate under the market mechanism in the future, the involvement of economic sectors and concerned parties will ensure the transparency and sustainability of the mechanism, she noted./.
