Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Le Dinh Tien has underlined Vietnam ’s consistent policy of using atomic energy for peaceful purposes, ensuring nuclear safety and security, and non-proliferation.

Vietnam regards this as its responsibility as a member of the global community in the sphere, Tien went on to say at the annual Nuclear Power Asia 2014 conference, the second of its kind held in Hanoi from January 20-22.

The country has ratified the supplementary protocol to its Safeguards Agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Convention on Physical Protection of Nuclear Material, and the Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and Radioactive Waste Management, he noted.

It has completed the fuel conversion programme for its Da Lat research reactor, Tien revealed.

The Vietnamese representative joined hundreds of nuclear power experts in the region to discuss a number of key issues pertaining to the field, such as nuclear power development in Southeast Asian and Vietnam in particular, and future nuclear power plants that are safe, economic, and environmentally friendly.

They also discuss management strategies and solutions to nuclear problems and shared the latest development trends.-VNA
