Nuclear safety council convenes first session

Chaired over by Minister of Science and Technology Nguyen Quan, the session was attended by representatives from by the Ministries of Industry and Trade, Public Security, Defence, Public Health, and Natural Resources and Environment.

The session focused on discussions about operational regulations and plans of the council, and the urgent works necessary between now and the end of 2012 and during 2013, in accordance with the Law on Atomic Energy.

The participants also discussed policies and measures to ensure nuclear safety when using nuclear energy in the country. The preparatory works for assessing the safety of nuclear power plant location was also deliberated carefully.

The Council’s permanent agency proposed the set up of a national action programme to ensure radiation safety and nuclear security by 2020 in order to summit to the Prime Minister for the approval.

The meeting also heard a report on the progress of the location survey and the preparation of the feasibility study for the Ninh Thuan nuclear power project, and a report on requirements concerning safe infrastructure development for the nation’s nuclear power programme.
