The Hanoi People's Committee has issued a detailed maintenance plan for the areas of the city that include old streets.

The old streets area covers Ba Dinh, Hoan Kiem, Tay Ho and Hai Ba Trung districts and does not include old quarters, the Hoan Kiem (Sword) Lake area, the Ba Dinh political centre or the southern part of Hoang Hoa Tham Street. The old streets area includes some 150 streets.

The old streets area will be maintained as garden streets, while public spaces and old villas built before 1954 will be restored.

The city will perform research in rebuilding the architecture along both sides of the streets.

Each building in the old streets area will be 4-6 storeys high, which is some 16-22m high, and the area's population density is about 230 people per hectare.

The colour of the buildings must complement each other. The buildings will not use complicated architectural details or a black or brown canvas.

Hospitals in the old streets area will not be expanded and will not receive more sick beds.
Universities, colleges and vocational schools will not be built in the area.

Manufacturing enterprises that cause pollution will be moved outside the area. The land they currently occupy will be used for public buildings.-VNA
