Hanoi (VNA) – Tran Tuan Minh is now the only Vietnamese player in the leading group of the HDBank Cup International Open Chess tournament, which is underway in Hanoi.

On March 11, Tran Tuan Minh defeated Vo Thanh Ninh, another Vietnamese, to win all his first three matches and rank second after Argentina’s Alan Pichot.

The leading group currently comprises six players with three points each.

The three Vietnamese players who were in the leading group after the second match, Nguyen Anh Khoi, Tran Minh Thang and Lu Chan Hung, did not win their third matches. Khoi and Thang lost while Hung drew.

Le Quang Liem of Vietnam also scored a victory in the third match and retained his position in the second group, which consists of the players with 2.5 points.

The fourth and fifth matches of the tournament will take place on March 12.

After seven editions in Ho Chi Minh City, this is the first time the HDBank Cup International Open Chess tournament has been held in Hanoi. It is the biggest professional chess tourney in Vietnam and Southeast Asia and a competition in the World Chess Federation’s system.  

The event, scheduled to last through March 15, attracted about 270 players from 21 countries and territories. It offers a total of 55,000 USD in prizes, an increase of about 20 percent compared to last year.-VNA
