The Vietnam Development Communication Centre (VDIC) of the World Bank in Vietnam in coordination with the RoK Development Institute (KDI) and members of the Global Development Learning Network (GDLN) held an online workshop themed “Reforestation” in Hanoi on March 13.

Participants included managers and researchers in the forestry field from various countries, such as Japan , China , RoK , Mongolia and Cambodia .

The workshop aims to share the RoK and Japan ’s experience in forestation to promote sustainable development on a large scale, and the sharing of reforestation information among the countries, including Vietnam .

The Pacific and East Asian region is one of many tropical forest areas, according to the VDIC.

However, it was degraded and threatened during the last decade. Deforestation has caused significant damage to the environment and economy, escalating the risk of downstream flooding, climate change, and increasing the difficulties for poor people in the world.

Technical Advisor to the General Director of the Royal Cambodian Forestry Hiroshi Nakata touched upon many different opinions from Asia and Europe on reforestation.

He spoke highly of Vietnam ’s efforts to implement a reforestation project of 5 million hectares.

Professor Emeritus of Seoul National University Kyung Joon Lee introduced the successful implementation of the RoK’s reforestation, and emphasised the Government’s hard-hitting activities on the reforestation project, especially improving nursery quality.

Participants shared and discussed several issues relating to reforestation, and consulted the experts on its implementation in each country.-VNA
