– More than 500 Lao students, who are studying in Vietnam’s central province of Thua Thien – Hue, were brought together on April 8 to celebrate Laos’ traditional New Year festival of Bunpimay.

The celebration was held by Hue University and Thua Thien-Hue College of Education with traditional rituals such as praying for luck, splashing water and typing a string around a person’s wrist.

Lao students introduced the unique culture of Laos through art performances.

Bunpimay festival is observed on April 13-16 annually to pray for good weather, health, abundant harvests and prosperity.

The programme helps cheer up Lao students and tightens friendship between the two countries.

On the occasion, the Lao Embassy in Vietnam and Hue University presented certificates of merit to 60 outstanding Lao students.

Universities and colleges across Thua Thien-Hue province have trained about 1,100 Lao students via a cooperation programme between Vietnamese and Lao localities.

They have also built lodging for more than 500 Lao students.

Schools have held culture, art and sport activities for Vietnamese and Lao students to promote their their friendship and mutual understanding

Annually, Thua Thien-Hue provides scholarships training Vietnamese and pursuing higher education for Laos’ provinces of Salavan, Sekong, Champasak and Khammuon.-VNA
