Overseas Vietnamese are an important component and a source of internal strength of the nation, Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee Nguyen Thien Nhan confirmed.

Meeting with over 400 expatriates, of whom many are living in Ho Chi Minh City and the southern provinces, on February 15, Nhan acknowledged overseas Vietnamese’s contributions to the country’s socio-economic development, citing their remittances worth of 11 billion USD in 2013.

He hailed the expatriates for acting as cultural ambassadors in their host countries and bridging economic, and scientific and technological ties with the fatherland.

Ho Chi Minh City has 24 OVs liaison committees and more than 2.5 million expatriates, including 9,000 registering long-term stay.

According to the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese, more than 4.5 million Vietnamese live in over 100 countries and territories worldwide.-VNA
