Parliament leader notes development potential of Lai Chau’s border district

Lai Chau (VNA) – National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan noticed the relatively big and diverse potential for development of Nam Nhun while visiting this border district of the north-western province of Lai Chau on March 11.

The mountainous district comprises 11 communes and towns and has 11 ethnic groups.

The parliament leader highlighted Nam Nhun’s wide forestry and unused land area of 49,726ha (or 36 percent of the total natural area), which is favourable for livestock farming.

Despite a number of difficulties, the district has done a good job of ensuring social welfares as evidenced by an annual 5.5-percent decrease in the household poverty rate, she said.

Home to the Lai Chau hydropower plant – one of the largest of its kind in Vietnam, Nam Nhun should step up forest protection and development so as to ensure water security, she told local officials.

She assured that the Party and the State pay special attention to displacement and resettlement, applauding the district’s efforts to resettle 829 households with 3,316 people for the construction of the Lai Chau hydropower plant.

Chairwoman Ngan asked local authorities to continue ensuring living conditions for 738 households with 3,023 people who were displaced by the building of the Son La hydropower plant.

She also told them to pay heed to the reinforcement of the political system, particularly in training officials of ethnic minority groups.
