Hanoi (VNA) – National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan met with representatives of severely injured war veterans nationwide in Hanoi on July 24, ahead of the 72nd War Invalid and Martyrs’ Day (July 27).

At the meeting, Minister of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs Dao Ngoc Dung said the Government will hold a gathering on July 25 to honour 500 outstanding veterans who lost at least 81 percent of their work capability to severe injuries they got while serving in the army.

They have won over their wounds and illnesses to move forwards. Many of them have become role models in economic activities, taken part in the search for and repatriation of their comrades’ remains, and engaged in social and humanitarian activities, he said, noting that these are the exemplars in the patriotic emulation movement.

For their part, representatives of the invalids said they always remember late President Ho Chi Minh’s saying “disabled, but not useless” to weather every difficulty to help themselves and their families, as well as contribute to society.

They expressed their hope that the Party and State will continue implementing support policies for revolution contributors, along with for descendants of Agent Orange/dioxin victims.

Expressing the deep gratitude to all war invalids, martyrs’ families and other revolution contributors nationwide, Chairwoman Ngan asked them to continue helping with national development and defence and remain the bright examples to younger generations.

Following President Ho Chi Minh’s instructions, the Party and State have always paid attention to repaying revolution contributors and their families, with preferential treatments, showing the deed is the responsibility of not only the Party and State but also the whole society, she said.

Aside from the implementation of these policies, caring for revolution contributors has become regular activities and popular among people of all social strata, as well as authorities and socio-political organisations.

The top legislator hailed the will of and efforts by war invalids, martyrs’ families and revolution contributors to overcome their pains and losses to continue devoting their strength, wisdom and talent to their hometowns and the country.

She also highly valued the caring activities of authorities, sectors, agencies and organsations at all levels, asking them to keep promoting this work. -VNA
