Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has proposed that the US continue to work closely with Vietnam in healing the pains of war, especially through demining and supporting victims of Agent Orange/Dioxin in Vietnam.

Meeting the visiting US Senate President Pro Tempore Patrick Leahy on April 17 in Hanoi , the Party leader said he wishes to witness new progress in the friendship and bilateral cooperation between Vietnam and the US , particularly when both countries are celebrating the 20th anniversary since they normalised their relations.

Vietnam , with its consistent external policies of independence, self-reliance with hopes for multilarisation and diversification of relations as well as international integration, considers the US as a top important partner, he said.

He suggested that the two sides maintain and increase ties at all levels. Vietnam hopes that the US fosters its partnership with Vietnam within the current frameworks and realms.

For his part, Leahy briefed his host on the fruitful outcomes of his working sessions with Vietnamese leaders.

Praising the rising position of Vietnam in the region and the world, he affirmed that the Parliament and Government of the US are keen on strengthening multi-faceted cooperation with Vietnam , effectively realising the bilateral comprehensive strategic partnership that was set up in last July.

He expressed special interest in the development of ties between the two parliaments, voicing his support for the establishment of bilateral relationship via party channels.

He appreciated Vietnam ’s goodwill and cooperation in seeking missing US soldiers in the war, pledging that his country will continue its efforts to work with Vietnam in dealing with the war consequences faced by the people and environment of Vietnam .

During the meeting, General Secretary Trong and the US senators also discussed regional and international issues of mutual concern.

They also underscored the importance of bilateral affiliation in maintaining peace, stability, prosperity and development in the region and the world.-VNA
