Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong on July 7 (local time) met with crowds of Vietnamese expats and Americans during his ongoing visit to the US.

Briefing the attendees, including war veterans, religious dignities, white-collar workers and scholars from Vietnam and the US, the Party leader highlighted the 20 years of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and the US and the establishment of the comprehensive partnership between the two nations.

He thanked the Americans for their support to Vietnam, saying Vietnam continually wishes to develop a fruitful cooperative relationship with the US.

He also attached significance to people-to-people exchange and cooperation in enhancing mutual understanding and consolidating friendship between the two nations.

He said he hopes people-to-people organisations of the two countries will promote their meetings and cooperation in the future.

He also underlined the huge potential for mutual cooperation in maintaining peace and security in line with the United Nations’ Charter and international law and dealing with traditional and non-traditional security challenges and risks.

Other fields for mutual cooperation between Vietnam and the US include sustainable development, environmental protection, climate change adaptation, infectious disease prevention and control, poverty reduction and equal trade promotion as well as exchanges of culture, education, training, science and technology.

Party General Secretary Trong reiterated the room for mutual dialogue and cooperation in ensuring human rights, gender equality and rights for ethnic minority and vulnerable groups.

Participants hoped that Vietnam and the US would put aside their differences and move on from the past to promote a better future for their mutual benefit and development.-VNA
