Beijing (VNA) – Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong attended a friendly meeting in Beijing on January 13 celebrating the 67th anniversary of Vietnam-China diplomatic ties and the upcoming Lunar New Year.

Speaking at the event, the Party leader expressed his delight at meeting again Chinese friends and comrades who contributed to Vietnam’s revolutionary cause and Vietnam-China friendship.

The Party, State and people of Vietnam always value whole-hearted support that the Chinese counterparts provided for Vietnam during the national liberation and reunification, he said, adding that despite ups and downs over the past 67 years, friendship and cooperation remain a mainstream in bilateral ties.

As close neighbours, Vietnam and China have similar political regimes led by the communist parties so that stability and development are crucial to both sides. The strengthening of the healthy and stable friendship and comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership between Vietnam and China is a historic responsibility and objective requirement, matching basic and long-term interests of the two people and for the sake of peace, stability and development in the region and the world, he noted.

The relations between the two Parties and the two States are growing positively, serving as a prerequisite and an important driving force to the continuous development of the two countries’ ties for the sake of the two people, the region and the world, he said.

According to him, both sides extensively discussed and reached common consensus on important perceptions of major orientations to fostering political trust and improving win-win cooperation in diverse areas, agreed to consistently deal with issues at sea in line with basic principles while maintaining peace, stability and development of bilateral ties.

He noted that people-to-people friendship is a social foundation and a source of power for bilateral ties, and wished that sentiment between the two nations would be closer and more attention would be paid to educating young generations about the tradition of bilateral ties.

The Vietnamese leader wished that the Chinese Party, government and people led by Xi Jinping would reap greater successes in the cause of building a well-off society and a modern socialist State with prosperity, democracy, civilisation and harmony, as well as successfully host the 19th National Party Congress later this year.

Chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference Yu Zhengsheng, for his part, stressed that the Chinese Party and State attach special importance to developing ties with Vietnam, and give the China-Vietnam ties in a special position in external relations with neighbouring countries.

He described the time-honoured friendship fostered by Presidents Ho Chi Minh and Mao Zedong and generations of leaders during the national liberation as an invaluable asset of the two peoples that needs to be appreciated, inherited and upheld.

Over the past years, both sides have properly settled border delimitation on land and in the Gulf of Tonkin via internal negotiations.

Yu believed that with straightforward and friendly discussions in light of each side’s interests, any complicated issues will be tackled appropriately and any factor would not hinder the development of bilateral ties.

In the new year, China and Vietnam will welcome new development opportunities and write a new chapter of cooperation to bring happiness to the two people, he said.

At the event, participants were treated to music and dance performances staged by Vietnamese and Chinese artists.-VNA
