Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and his entourage left the Belgian capital city of Brussels on January 20 (local time) for a State visit to Italy.

During his January 17-20 visits to Belgium and the European Union, Trong held talks with Belgian Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo, President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy and President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso.

He also met with Belgian Crown Prince Philippe, President of the Belgian Chamber of Representatives Andre Flahaut and President of the Belgian Senate Sabine De Bethune, Mayor of Brussels Freddy Thielemans as well as the Minister-Presidents of Wallonia-Brussels and Flanders regions.

At the meetings, the two sides discussed measures to further strengthen the friendship and multi-faceted cooperation between Vietnam and Belgium and the European Union.

The Vietnamese Party leader witnessed the signing of a number of cooperation agreements between Vietnam and Belgium, including those on cooperation in climate change response and the construction of Dinh Vu port in Hai Phong city.

Immediately after leaving Brussels, Trong sent a message expressing his thanks to Belgian Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo.-VNA
