Hanoi(VNA) - Oil and gas giant PetroVietnam and the US General Electric International (GE) Group will cooperate in developing two gas-fired power plants, No.1 and 2 in the central province of Quang Nam, using gas from the Ca Voi Xanh (Blue Whale) gas field.

A memorandum of understanding on the cooperation was inked in the framework of Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc’s visit to the US, PetroVietnam said.

The two plants will have a combined capacity of 1,500 MW, and will consume about 830 million cu.m of gas from the Ca Voi Xanh gas field.

Under the MoU, GE will support PetroVietnam in finding the best technological solutions to ensure effective use of input fuel and meet emission-related regulations.

The plants will be constructed at Chu Lai economic zone in Nui Thanh district. They are among four gas-fired power plants in the central gas-power centre approved by the Prime Minister in August last year.

As scheduled, the plants will be put into operation in 2023 and 2024, significantly contributing to the State budget and ensuring national energy security.

The Ca Voi Xanh field, operated by Exxon Mobil of the US, was discovered and put into commercial exploitation in May 2015.  It is the biggest gas project in Vietnam now, with reserves of 150 billion cu.m.-VNA
