Philippine President Benigno Aquino on September 19 urged members of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) in Zamboanga city to surrender in order to avoid further bloodshed.
More than 200 MNLF rebels stormed five communities in the Cambodian southern city on September 9, killing 100 people and making more than 100,000 others displaced from their homes.
Aquino, who has been in the city to direct a military campaign since last weekend, affirmed that the Philippine Government will spend 89.3 million USD on emergency aid for locals.
The MNLF signed a peace agreement with the government in 1996. However, some of its members still launched attacks, claiming governmental officials did not keep their promise to develop an autonomous region for Muslims in the south.
