Philippine President Benigno S. Aquino III on February 27 began his two-day official visit to Malaysia at the invitation of the latter’s King Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah, with the aim to further intensify the two countries’ trade and investment ties.
This is Aquino’s first visit to Malaysia since he took office on June 30, 2010.
He will hold talks with Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak on bilateral and regional issues, discussing ways to strengthen the two nations’ cooperation in many fields, including education and culture.
They are expected to exchange views on the upcoming signing of the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro between the Philippine Government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front.
The Filipino President also plans to address a business forum and meet the Philippine community in Malaysia.
Malaysia and the Philippines set up their diplomatic ties on May 18, 1964. Since then, their trade and investment relations have enjoyed ceaseless growth.
In the first 11 months of 2013, two-way trade hit 4.1 billion USD, of which 2.7 billion USD came from Malaysia’s exports.
There are more than 900,000 Philippine employees working in Malaysia.
Malaysia is the Philippines’ 11 th biggest tourism market, with 109,400 Malaysians visiting the country last year.-VNA
