More than 61 million voters registered tovote in the election which opened at 6 am (local time), with total 43,500candidates vying for over 18,000 positions.
The most important positions in theelection are 12 out of the 24 seats in the upper house Senate.
Independent surveys across the country showedthat the party of President Rodrigo Duterte is likely to win most of the seatsof the upper house, which will give him legal support towards his policies to fightcriminals and rewrite the constitution.
The results of the vote electing municipal councillorsand mayors are expected to come out hours after voting ends at 6 pm the sameday. Meanwhile, results of the Senate vote will be announced on May 17.-VNA
