Hanoi (VNA) - The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported on December 9 that Mount Kanlaon, located in central Philippines, has erupted, spewing an ash column as high as 3,000m.

The volcano is situated in the provinces of Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental.

Phivolcs has raised the alert to level 3, indicating that the volcano has started ejecting magma and could experience further eruptions. It advised local authorities to evacuate residents within a 6-km radius from the volcano’s summit and remain prepared for additional evacuations if necessary.

In September, hundreds of residents were forced to evacuate after Mount Kanlaon emitted thousands of tonnes of toxic gas in a single day. Standing at 2,400m above sea level, Kanlaon is one of the 24 active volcanoes in the Philippines./.
