The National Food Authority (NFA) of the Philippines has announced that the country’s rice stock reached nearly 2.92 million tonnes by June 30, sufficient for 83 days.
NFA Administrator Arthur O. Juan, however, said that the agency wants a bigger stock for at least 90 days. The country’s rice consumption averages 35,200 tonnes a day.
Juan also revealed that NFA planned to import an additional 200,000 tonnes of rice apart from the 800,000 tonnes approved early this year.
The new rice volume is expected to be delivered in August or September. Vietnam was invited to take part in the bid on the additional imports, according to the official.
Department of Agriculture Assistant Secretary for Field Operations Edilberto de Luna said rice output rose by 2.7 million tonnes over the past three years, from 15.7 million tonnes in 2010 to 18.4 million tonnes in 2013.
The country has set the goal of producing 21 million tonnes of paddy rice this year, an increase of 14 percent from the 2013 output.-VNA
