Hanoi (VNA) – Russia has appointed its first defense attaché to the Philippines in over 40 years, showing increased defence cooperation between the two countries, according to the Russian Embassy in the Southeast Asian nation.

Russian Ambassador to the Philippines Igor Khovaev officially introduced Defense Attaché, Col. Dmitry Nikitin to Philippine military officials at a ceremony in Manila on September 3.

The diplomat affirmed that the Russia – Philippines defence ties will contribute to the region’s stability.

This is the first time the two countries have decided to open a new channel of communication, he said, adding that the decision is in full compliance with the strategic interests of not only the Philippines and Russia but also of all countries in the region.

For his part, Philippine Defense Undersecretary Raymundo DV Elefante welcomed Col. Nikitin, expressing his optimism about stronger military ties between his country and Russia.

He said with this cooperation, the two countries will have a very good opportunity in terms of cooperation and friendship.-VNA
