Chapters of women’s associations in the northern midland province of Phu Tho have raised over 1.1 trillion VND (52 million USD) in loans to help their members do business.

The sum was disbursed to about 115,000 members. Of this amount, over 843 billion VND (40 million USD) came from the Bank for Social Policies, benefitting more than 56,000 women. The chapters also loaned 2.5 billion VND (119,000 USD) to nearly 500 others.

Among the over 11,700 poor households with women as the principal earner, up to 10,700 received support from women’s associations last year, lifting over 1,200 households out of poverty. Around 5,500 others are making positive steps in the right direction.

Nearly 600 training courses on farming techniques have been available to more than 34,000 women, with vocational training and job consultancy also on offer.

Vice Chairman of the provincial chapter Nguyen Quynh Thu Lieu said more efforts will be made this year in order to improve the lives of local people, particularly women.-VNA
