Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung on September 7 attended a ceremony to start construction work on a new highway connecting the northern provinces of Thai Nguyen and Bac Kan, as well as the upgrade and expansion of a section of National Highway 3 in the form of BOT (Build-Operate-Transfer) contract.

Both projects have a total investment of nearly 2,750 billion VND (137 million USD), and will help reduce traffic congestion and accidents on the current National Highway 3.

Moreover, they will be part of a network of highways connecting the northern mountainous provinces with the capital city of Hanoi, serving socio-economy development and national security in the northern mountainous region.

Addressing the ceremony, PM Dung said the BOT investment in the two projects are in line with the Party’s policy of raising capital from all possible sources to invest in socio-economic infrastructure, particularly roads.

The PM also asked Thai Nguyen and Bac Kan’s provincial leaders to make concerted efforts to help citizens who have to relocate to make way for the roads to quickly settle down and have stable life.

The new Thai Nguyen-Bac Kan highway is 40km long and expected to be completed in early 2016. It is designed to have two lanes for motorized vehicles, with standard highway speed of 60-80km/hour.-VNA
