Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has expressed expectation that the young generation would follow the Fields winner to devote themselves to the science.
The Government leader emphasised that Ngo Bao Chau’s honour should be multiplied at a ceremony on August 29 to welcome the professor home after winning the world’s top mathematic prize.
Dung said the Fields prize was the pride to Prof. Chau personally, teachers and the entire Vietnamese people and brought fame to the nation.
He expressed thanks to French and US scientists for fostering Prof. Chau to his success today.
The Government has assigned relevant agencies to start procedures for distinguishing the Professor, Dung added.
He reiterated that Vietnam should train more and more Ngo Bao Chau, build a society ideal to study and work out a mechanism that respects the talents in an effort not to lag behind the world.
Prior to the welcoming ceremony, thousands of students lined up at the gate of the My Dinh National Convention Centre where the event was to take place in a hope to meet the honoured professor.
Some of students in his former general school and University of Natural Sciences expressed their determination to follow his example.
Their sentiments have made Chau extremely moved as he confided in his speech.
“It was touching to heart for me at catching the pride in the eyes of young students at the ceremony today,” Chau said.
Prof. Chau was one of the four mathematicians to win the Fields prize on August 19 and became the first Vietnamese to win the honour.
Prof. Chau won the award for his proof of the Fundamental Lemma in the theory of automorphic forms, by introducing new algebro-geometric methods. The exalted award, comparable to the Nobel prize for mathematics is awarded only to mathematicians under the age of 40.
After receiving the prize, Prof. Chau said “I would like to believe the Fields prize will make a turning point and breathe a new life into science and tertiary education in Vietnam. Along with numerous weak points, backwardness and conservations, I see with my own eyes mature people devoted to science and young friends in love with science.”
He confirmed that an education promotion fund named Ngo Bao Chau would be founded in future.
The Fields laureate expressed thanks to the Party and Government as well as teachers both at home and abroad for creating favourable conditions for him to receive this honour.
