Kuala Lumpur (VNA) – Malaysian Prime MinisterMahathir Mohamad warned on October 21 that his country could be hit with tradesanctions amid rising protectionism.

Addressing the Praxis conference held by theInstitute of Strategic and International Studies (ISIS) Malaysia, although hedid not mention the source of possible sanctions, the PM said he isdisappointed that proponents of free trade are now indulging in restrictive tradepractices on a “grand scale”.

Unfortunately, Malaysia is caught in the middle,he noted, referring to the US-China trade war.

The PM added economically, his exports-reliantcountry is linked to both markets and physically, it is also caught in betweenfor geographical reasons. There are even suggestions that Malaysia would be atarget for sanctions.

To cushion the impact of the superpowers’ tradetensions, Malaysia is collaborating more with its regional neighbours, hesaid./.
