Kuala Lumpur (VNA) – Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad warned on October 21 that his country could be hit with trade sanctions amid rising protectionism.

Addressing the Praxis conference held by the Institute of Strategic and International Studies (ISIS) Malaysia, although he did not mention the source of possible sanctions, the PM said he is disappointed that proponents of free trade are now indulging in restrictive trade practices on a “grand scale”.

Unfortunately, Malaysia is caught in the middle, he noted, referring to the US-China trade war.

The PM added economically, his exports-reliant country is linked to both markets and physically, it is also caught in between for geographical reasons. There are even suggestions that Malaysia would be a target for sanctions.

To cushion the impact of the superpowers’ trade tensions, Malaysia is collaborating more with its regional neighbours, he said./.
