Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung on June 1 ordered an acceleration in providing support to businesses affected by social disturbances in early May.

He said ministries and localities have already taken comprehensive and drastic measures to ensure security and order, prevent further legal violations and assist the businesses, helping them resume their normal operations.

To further maintain security and regain foreign investors’ confidence in Vietnam, the PM asked the People’s Committees of provinces and centrally-run cities containing affected enterprises to immediately set up working groups in industrial and economic parks to oversee the implementation of support measures.

The cabinet leader also assigned the Ministry of Planning and Investment to coordinate with the ministries of finance; foreign affairs; labour, invalids and social affairs; and public security; along with the State Bank of Vietnam, the Vietnam Social Insurance Agency and relevant localities to establish inter-sectoral teams to speed up the work. He called on particular support to be offered to businesses in Vung Ang Economic Zone, the central province of Ha Tinh.

At the same time, the Ministry of Public Security was ordered to cooperate with the localities to ensure security and order, especially in industrial and economic parks, swiftly seek and return assets stolen from businesses, and closely follow the situation in order to prevent any recurrence.

The disturbances in some localities, including central Ha Tinh and southern Binh Duong and Dong Nai provinces, erupted during workers’ rallies protesting China’s illegal placement of its oil rig Haiyang Shiyou – 981 in Vietnam’s continental shelf and exclusive economic zone from early May.

Some extremists incited others to destroy the property of foreign firms, as well as some belonging to the State, national businesses and individuals, and acted against law enforcement officials, disrupting social order and business activities.
