Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung called on ASEAN member nations to exert more efforts to enhance transport linkages by creating further favourable conditions for transport within the region.

The government leader made the request at the opening of the 15 th ASEAN Transport Ministers Meeting in the Vietnamese capital city of Hanoi on Dec. 10.

Transport linkages are considered an indispensable factor in realising the ASEAN Community by 2015, he said, adding that it is important that the regional countries step up cooperation to recover and develop their economies before the global financial-economic crisis is over.

PM Dung urged the transport ministers to discuss and put forth initiatives and strategies to develop traffic systems within the bloc as well as specific measures to implement those ideas.

During the two-day meeting, participants will deliberate programmes and plans to boost cooperation in aviation, maritime and land transport to accelerate the liberalisation of transport services and facilitate transit and cross-border transport between ASEAN countries and their partner nations./.
