The HCM City Department of Criminal Investigation of Social Order arrested two people from the Republic of Korea (RoK) and three Vietnamese members of an illegal marriage broker ring in the car park of Tan Son Nhat Airport on March 15.
The police arrested the five ring members who were introducing 18 Vietnamese women aged between 18-25 to two men from the RoK in the car park.
They included Nguyen Thi Anh Nguyen, Pham Thi Quyen, and Pham Thanh Tung, all 33 of Binh Duong Province ’s Ben Cat District and Kim Okdo and Kim Yeong Sull, both 49.
According to the police, Okdo and Yeong Sull would find Korean men who wanted to pay for a Vietnamese bride, the contact Nguyet who would arrange potential wives.
Allegedly the two foreign men who wanted to buy the brides at the airport said they were struggling financially so could not afford local wives.
The fee for a bride was 4,000 USD, including 1,600 USD for the Korean middlemen from the RoK, 500 USD for Nguyet and 3 million VND for the “bride”, according to investigators.
Nguyet and Quyen are already facing investigations into an illegal marriage brokering ring they were allegedly running in Ben Cat District in February.
