Thousands of poor students across the country have received material support from organisations and individuals both at home and abroad on the occasion of the new school year.

Compassion International Taiwan, a non-governmental organisation of Taiwan , on September 6 presented over 1,000 scholarships worth 1.4 billion VND (65,800 USD) to underprivileged students in the central province of Quang Tri.

The Taiwanese organisation also provided 448 million VND to help three nursery schools in Huong Hiep , Mo O and Dakrong communes in Dakrong district organise day- boarding programmes and another 1.7 billion VND to build a kindergarten in Hai Ba commune, Hai Lang district.

Quang Tri province has over 30,000 poor children. More than 11,000 are in special difficulty, over 6,000 have disabilities and some 2,000 others are infected by Agent Orange (AO)/dioxin.

The same day, an additional 443 Odon Vallet scholarships were presented to students in southern cities and provinces.

According to Prof. Odon Vallet, who started the foundation, 2,250 scholarships have been granted to outstanding students across the country so far this year.

Since its inception in 2001, the charity has presented nearly 30,000 scholarships to Vietnamese students.-VNA
