The Government has asked the Vietnam Electricity (EVN) and relevant agencies to soon implement a project on connecting Ly Son island offshore Quang Ngai central province with the national power network.

A working team visited the island, one of the six islands nationwide subject to special investment for economic and defence development, on March 18 and 19 to survey the actual conditions for the project, which must be completed by the end of 2014.

According to the Power Engineering Consulting Joint Stock Company 4, the island would be connected with the national grid with a cable line, of which 9.5 km will run on the mainland, 26km under the sea, and 2.5km on the island.

The beginning point of the cable is planned to be the Dung Quat 110KV transformer station, while the ending point is set at An Vinh commune, Ly Son district.

The 14 sq.km. Ly Son island is 24km from the mainland and has a population of over 20,000. The island only has diesel-fuelled generators, which supplies electricity for just 5 hours a night.-VNA
